Corning Volunteer Fire Dept. has restored and is preserving its 1920 Brockway #4553/American-LaFrance Model B-4 chemical & hose var, Registered No. B-289. It appears in several local parades every year. About ten years ago, Corning firefighters replaced the two front solid rubber tires with modern reproductions; the rear solid rubber tires are still the originals from 1920. Increasing Corning's eligibility for a SPAAMFAA Preservation Award is the fact that they are also preserving a second antique fire engine, a 1960 Ford F-250/Van Pelt Model VPMF "Multifog" pumper serial #1486. The nomination for this award was made in 2022. SPAAMFAA District 3 Trusteee Ed Hass presented the award to Corning fire chief Tom Tomlinson, and ten of his volunteer firefighters, at the Corning City Council meeting on January 23, 2024. With a fresh battery and a newly rebuilt carburetor, Corning's 1960 Ford/Van Pelt was parked in front of the city council chambers for this award peresentation. The 1920 Brockway/American-LaFrance would have been there, too, but its motor was under repair that day, in preparation for its next parade,
The Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motor Fire Apparatus in America (SPAAMFAA) is an organization of people dedicated to the preservation, restoration, and operation of antique fire apparatus.
