SCAM ALERT!!! SCAM ALERT!!!  SCAM ALERT!!!

We have been alerted to a felony that is being attempted on advertisers of apparatus on this web site and others.  The advertiser receives an email similar to the actual text printed below:

"Dear Seller,

I'm interested in purchasing your advertised 1955 ALF Quint and the price $5900 is okay by me.  I'm shipping it to cotonou Benin Republic in Africa and if I can pay with a cheque drawn in an America bank.  If this is okay with you do get back to me immediately for me to arrange the payment.  Concerning the shipment, my shipper will come and pick it up from you location as soon as we seal this transaction. A client of mine is owing me some fund in ($US9,600), I will instruct him to issue a cheque in your name and once the cheque clears, You will deduct the cost of the 1955 ALF Quint plus the tax and my balance will be send back to me via western union money transfer for immediate shipping arrangement.  The reason for this is that it takes 3-5 days for a cheque to clear over there while it takes a longer time for a cheque to clear here.  If this is okay with you do get back to me immediately with your full name, contact address and phone number for me to instruct my client to issue the cheque in your name.  Thanks for your understanding in anticipation.

best regards,
Alan"

(all spelling and grammar errors as original)

This scam goes by various names but the basic operation is to furnish a bank check, the seller deposits the check,  pays the excess to the perpetrator and gives the apparatus to his shipper.  At a later time, the check comes back as no good or stolen and the seller is out the apparatus and the "excess money" that was sent to the perpetrator.  The scam takes various guises but always has the same result.

The ANNOUNCEMENTS AND SERVICES section has been moved to it's own page to allow our readers to reach the apparatus ads more quickly and easily.  Just click on the blue hyperlink ANNOUNCEMENTS AND SERVICES immediately below to go to the new home of that section.

FIRE APPARATUS FOR SALE

FOR SALE:  Totally original 1953 Howe Defender fire truck. Complete, runs well including the pump assy. Comes with manuals and books, spare parts, etc. This vehicle has a 850CU Waukesha gasoline motor with dual carbs and dual ignition (magneto as well as distributor/points/coil). The motor also has the facility to be crank started! The low 6.- 1 compression and the magneto allows for easy crank starting, believe it or not! This rig needs little in the way of mechanicals but l would install a 12volt internally regulated alternator to sort out the wiring, flush the fuel and brake/trans/diff etc. This would be a very easy restoration for an enthusiast of these incredible vehicles. This rig runs and drives well and could be restored to original or converted into a fantastic hauler, tow vehicle or parade vehicle.  l'm aware of the value of this fine truck as l've been contacted by many of the ardent vintage firetruck enthusiasts nationwide. l will not sell it for parts, l may trade or partial trade and anyone with information on the Howe Defender trucks is welcome to chime in with information. May trade up/down for motorcycle or livaboard boat. Asking $3900 OBO.  Contact email: KingRoyea@aol.com

FOR SALE:  1926 American Lafrance City Service Truck. Restored in the 90's or early 2000's then put into storage. I'm told it was pulled out once every year or two for parades. Truck when put away had just over 600 original miles. Pump should work but I would assume it may need new gaskets. Comes with everything shown in the pictures. The truck with the ladders on it is 41 feet long but if the longest ladder was removed it is 36 feet long. Runs and drives as it should with a small water pump leak (can be repaired easily and might be done next week). All fluids were just changed and truck has been greased. It is a very unique and rare truck, I just have too many and need some room. Also coming up for sale are a 38 Pirsch open cab, 41 Pirsch open cab, 48 Lafrance, 62 Mack, 68 Mack and a 76 Seagrave. Call if interested, selling to best offer. Truck is located in Southeastern Wisconsin. Delivery possible. Call 262-497-5800 or email info@fsl-racine.com  (09/07/08--08-58)

FOR SALE: 1942 Ford / Ward LaFrance pumper - US Army Corps of Engineers type WLFF6 with Waterous CA1 pump, along with a parts truck, a 1947 Ford cab/chassis. Some experts have told me the WLFF6 with CA1 pump is one of only 3 known to still exist in that combination. It will be an ambitious project for the right person due to years of exposure to the elements, but with a unique and worthwhile result. Here's what you get: The pumper has a restorable body and a good frame, bad engine, wheels, and cab, driveline condition unknown. The parts truck was put away in running condition about 5 years ago, so the Flathead V8 should be useable, and this truck will help with some cab and interior parts and also wheels and any driveline components needed, as it was roadworthy 5-6 years ago. Other accessory parts I have collected for the project will be included as well. I am short on time and space for projects, so these must go, saving me from a tough decision about possibly scrapping them. Hopefully they can be appreciated by the right person. Asking $1300 for the pair, call Dan at 518-585-9882 or 518-586-6081 (leave a message if no answer) for more details or photos, or e-mail dh447@nycap.rr.com   (09/03/08--08-54)

FOR SALE: 1955 Maxim pumper originally from Schuyler Heights, NY. Cosmetically this truck is beautiful inside and out, ready to turn heads at any parade or show. Very little is needed to complete the cosmetic restoration. Truck was restored by a private owner about 10 years ago and taken to local shows, then parked indoors for the past several years. Nobody has attempted to start this truck in a few years, but it does turn over under its own ignition power (I didn't attempt to go further with starting it until it gets fresh gas, oil, etc.). No known mechanical issues at the time it was parked. Has original Hercules gas engine, typical low mileage. Includes 2 new batteries and some accessories in the compartments. The booster reel came separately, I will reattach it before truck sells. Sale does NOT include the bell or Federal Beacon, or the loose hoses in the bed, they have been saved for my other Maxim. Otherwise, truck is complete as shown. Asking $2900. FOR SALE:  1925 Ahrens Fox Piston Pumper ORIGINAL.  This is the 1925 Ahrens Fox JS4 from Washington Courthouse Ohio. The truck still wears its original paint, decoration, and brightwork; which to the advanced collector; is like a time capsule. The seat was reupholstered in 1988 by Snyders Auto Restoration in Mount Joy PA, done in leather and horse hair like it was done originally. The paint has been preserved with a coat of automotive clear. The gold leaf decoration is worn in spots and you can see the silver leaf under the tinted varnish, which shows the age of a truck of this vintage. The pump was rebuilt in 2002 with all new valves, leathers and bearings. All the wiring has been replaced with the original style cloth-covered wire. It comes complete with all equipment including the original Ahrens Fox extinguishers, hand lanterns, one playpipe (Ahrens Fox), and three tips. The truck came with two play pipes (see delivery photo), several other nozzles, original strainer, pikepole (not Ahrens Fox), ladders, original hard suction (which we have used and pumped for hours), original bell, siren, and searchlight, axes, and soft suction. The Windshield (not on) was purchased from Ahrens Fox in 1937 and does come with the truck. It also has its original commission plate for Washington Court House, Ohio still mounted on the splash apron.

The engine received its HPOF (Historic Preservation of Original Features) at the AACA meet in Moline IL in 2004. That show also won the truck the best prewar HPOF vehicle of any shows that year, and was presented at the AACA National meeting in Philadelphia PA. It also won best in class in 2005 at the Cranbrook Concours in Michigan.

If you are looking for a shiny paint truck, this is not the truck for you. If you are looking for a museum quality ORIGINAL truck that runs and pumps like the day it was made, this is the truck for you. This is the nicest surviving piston pumper. It is our hope that the next owner will cherish this truck for the piece of fire and automotive history that it is, and continue the legacy of care-taking that will preserve it for future generations to see. Fire engines can be restored many times, but they’re only original once. Please contact Ryan DeVries, 616-453-8254, RLDEVR1048@att.net . Asking $89,500.00  (05/20/08---08-22)

FOR SALE:  A 1961 closed cab Seagrave and a 1971 Seagrave open cab from the same department. They are in excellent condition. I would really like to see both of these go to someone together but I will separate them for the right price.

The 1961 has a Detroit 8v71 turbo engine and it was put in this truck in 1982. It has air brakes and the total miles on the truck are 10,000 original miles. It runs and drives without any problems. The body is in great shape (see photos). Minor scratches and nicks on the paint, less than normal for a truck that was in service for many years. I think the truck was repainted at some time in its life. It was owned by Dravosburg Pa and was sold to Charleroi in 1982 I got it about 2 years ago.  It has a 1000gpm 2 stage pump that works great. It also has a separate high pressure pump, but I have never used it. I think it works but I don't know. It has a 600 gallon poly tank and a 20 gallon foam tank. It has a foam system on it and on spot chains that were added several years ago. It has a pre-piped water way for a deck gun. This truck is sold.

The 1971 open cab has 5,881 original miles. It has a Detroit 8v71 w/a very loud jake brake with a switch that has high, low, and off.  This one was bought new by Charleroi in 1971. It has a 1000gpm 2 stage pump that works fine and it also has a high pressure pump. I don't know if the high pressure pump works or not. It has a poly tank 500 gallons but there is a hole in the bottom of the tank that can be fixed. There are 2 crosslays under the booster reel hatch. The body is in great shape with only a couple of minor problems. 1 - On the officers side front fender, there is some bubbling of paint approx 2-3 inches, but there is no rust through. 2 - On the front of the cab below the drivers side door, there is a small rust crack. I believe this is like a compression crack and it hasn't gotten any bigger in many years. This one also has some minor scratches and nicks from normal use.  Priced at $10,000.

All of the lights, sirens, air horns, signals, and spot lights work as they should on both of the trucks. The tires on both of them are in very good shape with lots of miles left on them. Both of the trucks come with ladders, 2 hard sleeves each, the 1971 with a deck gun, 2 air packs on each, and some loose equipment.
These are 2 very nice Seagraves - probably some of the nicest around. I really hate to sell them but I need the space for another project.  Trucks are located in Stafford, Virginia.
I will answer all questions and if you need any more photos or information let me know. dcfd470@comcast.net . Bill at cell phone 540-903-2320.  (05/11/08---08-19)

FOR SALE:  1946 Seagrave Open Cab Ladder Truck that my Dad purchased in 1984 from the Black River Falls, WI Fire Department. It was purchased because he said "my dad never got me a fire truck when I was little, so I bought my own when I grew up." This unit was used in many local parades, and was also used for social functions. The ladders served as a great canopy holder to make a shelter. This truck has been stored for the past ten years or so, and was taken out of storage this summer to once again be put in a local parade. The hydraulic ladder works fine. There is a small water tank on this truck, but we never attempted to use it, so we don't know if that part works or not. Many of the original wooden ladders are also included with this truck. The reason for selling it is that my father is no longer able to drive this vehicle himself. There is a lot of original paperwork included with this vehicle. One paper shows that the original purchase date was October 2, 1946. This unit is currently located in Ingram, WI. He is asking $7,500.00 OBO. Phone : 715-322-4417 Duane.  (09/27/07)

FOR SALE:  a 1971 American LaFrance 1000 Series Pumper. It has an 8V71 Detroit with a 5 speed transmission. The truck served Meyersdale PA from 1971 to 1996 as the front line pumper. The truck was refurbished by 4-Guys at some point, just not sure what year.  Only selling because HOA said NO! It has a 750 Gallon water tank and a 1250GPM Hale pump. Pump does work.  Unit does come with electric siren, Federal Q (the one with the light in the front, added after this picture was taken), radios, powercall siren, 3 Scott 2A packs, bottles and masks, booster reel and hose, 3 or 4 nozzles (Akron smooth bore and fogs), blind caps, butterfly valve, gated Y, cones, water can, dry chem extinguisher, hose clamp, telephone style radio for the pump panel and a couple of sections of hose. I might have forgotten some things, but they will come with the truck anyway.  The truck runs, handles and shifts great, it has no problems running above 70mph. The truck has two new batteries.  Air, fuel and oil recently changed, also comes with extra fuel and oil filters and I have a list of part numbers the fire department gave me and they still have all maintenance records for it.  Tires are in great condition with lots of tread, the rear officers side outer tire is missing a couple of chunks (Looks like someone didn't know where a curb was).  Most of the lights work, just need a couple of bulbs in the ones that don't.  Now as with any truck that is 36 years old there is some rust that is confined to the fenders and cab around the fenders, also the drivers compartment floor is rusted, other than that all compartment and cab doors are in great shape. The drivers door window does have a crack in the lower corner, but the window does go up and down.  If you want to hear it run contact me and I can send you a clip of it running. I also have more pictures I can send you if interested. Just send me an e-mail address. Contact Info: Matt @ 571-437-6030 or rsq33eng@yahoo.com  Truck is located in Inwood WV, near Winchester VA. $3800/obo.  (05/13/07)

FOR SALE:  An 1863 Amoskeag steam pumper was in service with Relief Company #9 of the Pittsburgh Fire Department. The Amoskeag manufacturing company of Manchester, New Hampshire built this steamer bearing the serial number 78. The frame resembles the shape of a harp; a single vertical flywheel is mounted crosswise within the harp frame. The harp frame allowed the steamer to turn sharp corners that straight frame steamers could not navigate. The harp frame steamer is also extremely rare. Amoskeag Manufacturing only built 118 harp frame steamers. Only a few are known to exist. To the best of my knowledge, this is the oldest privately held Amoskeag horse drawn steam pumper in the world.
The history of this steam pumper started with Relief Company #9 of Pittsburgh in 1863. We do not know when it was pulled out of service or what happened to it until Mr. Walter Knott acquired it in the mid 1960’s. We can only consider it a miracle that such an amazing piece of craftsmanship did not go to the World War II scrap drives as most steam fire engines did. The Amoskeag was on display at Mr. Knott’s theme park “Knott’s Berry Farm” located in Buena Park, California. Around 1978 the steamer was once more on the move, the park was expanding and the steamer went into storage. The steamer was sold to an unidentified individual. This individual sold the steamer in 1980 to Mr. Ken Freiberg of Captain Ken’s Firehouse Foods in St. Paul, Minnesota. Ken used the steamer at trade shows to promote his food products. In 1985, Ken loaned the Amoskeag steamer to the Firefighters Memorial Museum in Minneapolis, MN. It sat on display at the museum until 1989. In late 1989, the company wanted to restore the steamer to its original glory and also have it once more, steam up and pump water. The steamer was disassembled piece by piece. The steam and water pump refurbished. The wheels, driver’s seat, suspension springs, and rear firebox stand repainted and meticulously pinstriped using real gold leaf and mother of pearl paint. The metal sent out for polishing and perfection. The boiler sent for inspection and certification. Just before assembly was to start in late 1999, Ken’s restoration expert had an opportunity to start a new career and left the project unassembled and unfinished. The company (Captain Ken’s Firehouse Foods) was sold to the Traxler Brothers and Ken’s prized Amoskeag steamer laid in hundreds or pieces in the back of the factory. The new owners of the company reassembled the steamer for Ken. Unfortunately, Ken passed away in 2005 and was not able to fulfill his dream of seeing the Amoskeag steam to life and
